Ice Cube

Ice Cube, whose real name is O’Shea Jackson, was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.
Cube is a Muslim, having converted in the 1990s. It is unclear what his religion was before that–if there was one. He takes a personal approach to his religion, saying that he isn’t a part of any sect or faction, that his spirituality is just between him and God.1 He said:
What I call myself is a natural Muslim, because it’s just me and God. You know, going to the mosque, the ritual and the tradition, it’s just not in me to do. So I don’t do it.2
Now a man with a family and a part of the mainstream entertainment industry, Cube has implied he cut ties with the Nation of Islam–the somewhat fundamentalist, militant Muslim organization–but in the early days of his conversion, he wrote on the sleeve of his album, Death Certificate:
The best place for a young black male or female is the Nation of Islam.

But this might be a bit too controversial for the modern Cube, who said:


Ah, when you say involved with the Nation, it’s tricky. I never was in the Nation of Islam.

I was raised in a sadly dysfunctional family. My father was anti-religion (all religions) and my mother was a non-practicing Southern Baptist. On my father's side of the family, religion was something to ridicule while one was "straight" and to adopt when one was drunk or high. He was born in July 1900 in the city of Lvov (German Lemberg), now in Poland, then part of the Austrian Empire. He was the descendant of a long line of rabbis, a line broken by his father, who became a barrister. Asad himself received a thorough education that would qualify him to keep alive the family's rabinnical tradition.
